Situated in the Thar desert of Kutch is the Rann of Kutch. It is the greatest salt desert in the world. With its mesmerizing white sand, beautiful landscapes, majestic cultural traits, and inspiring history the Rann of Kutch is sure to leave you in awe. And the celebration of this culture is Rann Utsav.

Rann Utsav began in 2005 as an initiative of Gujarat tourism. It takes place during winter for three months. This year Rann Utsav will begin on the 28th of October 2019 and go on till 23rd February 2020. Rann Utsav is a festival of color, culture, and adventure.

The experience of Rann Utsav starts with the tent city. Every year thousands of visitors stay in the tent city to experience a blend of art and luxury. You can easily book the tents through the official Rann Utsav website. Different packages for the same are available and can be chosen accordingly.

These packages include staying in the tent city, food, visiting Rann of Kutch and sightseeing of different destinations in Kutch. Moreover, many enjoyable cultural programs take place at Rann Utsav. All of which brings you a little closer to Kutch’s heritage.

While art, music, and dance keep one entertained and enlivens their time at Rann Utsav; how can we forget about adventure. There are many adventurous activities you can take part in during your visit.

Skyzilla is the adventure tower at Rann Utsav where you can try rock climbing,  go pendulum swinging in mid-air, witness Rann Utsav from the sky in para-motoring and ride ATV bikes on the white desert.

Adding to these, are the regal camel safaris to the Rann. The craft zone at the Rann Utsav lets you take a part of Kutch with you in the form of different handicrafts.

How to reach Kutch Rann Utsav?

Kutch does not have a railway station or airport. So the nearest city to Kutch is Bhuj. The distance between Kutch and Bhuj is approximately 80 km. A lot of transportation option is available from there to take you to Rann Utsav.

  1. By Air✈️: The closest airport to Rann Utsav is the Bhuj Airport. Flights at different timings are available from the metro cities to Bhuj.
  2. By Rail🚉: Many daily, as well as weekly trains,  are available to reach Bhuj. Bhuj connects to all of the major cities in India by railway. You can take a taxi or other public transportation from there to reach Rann Utsav.
  3. By Road🚗: This is the only way you can reach Rann Utsav. Also, buses from many cities are available to Bhuj. And from Bhuj, you have to take a taxi or use public transportation to get to Rann Utsav.

Bhirandiyara check post is the starting point of your Rann Utsav journey. Here you have to collect an entry pass to visit the Rann of Kutch. A specific amount is to be paid according to the number of people and the type of vehicle you are taking.

The main attraction of Rann Utsav is the tent city. Spread over an area of 5 lakh sq m with about 350 tents the tent city is a luxury lifestyle concept by Gujarat tourism. Established with all the comforts it is created every year specifically for the Rann Utsav. The construction of the tent city takes about two months and is a perfect blend of culture and richness.

When you make your bookings to stay at the tent city you can choose from different options like premium tents, swiss cottages ac and non-ac, Rajwadi suite and Darbari suite. Tents with all kinds of luxuries and urban amenities are available and thus can be booked well in advance. 

People on a budget can check some more economical options than the tent city. Likewise, affordable resorts with all necessary conveniences are available in and around Bhuj. In addition transportation to Rann Utsav from these resorts is easily possible. 

Best time to visit Kutch Rann Utsav:

Rann Utsav is open for complete three months so anytime is a good time to be there. But if you want to have it all, that is the right temperatures plus views of the magical white desert under the full moon then the month of December is just the time to visit.

There is a lot more that one can do while visiting the Rann Utsav. A few places which are quite famous in and around Bhuj can be toured. Many of these places are a part of the packages with your stay at the tent city. 

Kalo Dungar, Bhuj:

Kalo Dungar which means Black Hill in Gujarati is the highest point in Kutch. It is located at just 90 km from Bhuj towards Khavda village. This place is a scenic delight and the only spot from where you can experience a panoramic view of the Rann of Kutch.

Vijaya Vilas Palace, Mandvi:

Vijaya Vilas Palace located in Mandvi is the palace of the Jadeja’s of Kutch. Built around 1929 the main attraction of this palace are its architecture and its location near the Mandvi beach. Moreover, the palace is quite well maintained till date and is a prime scene for shooting Bollywood movies.

Mandvi Beach, Mandvi:

The Mandvi beach is the picturesque destination near the Vijaya Vilas Palace. Mandvi is a sea-beach that adds to the beauty of the palace thus making it a spot for tourist attraction. Visitors love Mandvi beach for its water sports, sunset views, and wind turbines.

Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Bhuj:

The old temple was constructed in the early 18th century but was destroyed by the 2001 earthquake in Bhuj. Completely made of marble and gold, they opened this new complex in 2010.  All in all, impressive architecture and serene environment makes this temple a definite visit.

Hiralaxmi Craft Park, Bhuj:

The Hiralaxmi craft park was built with a vision to preserve, restore and promote the art and artists of Kutch. This park is situated in the Bhujodi village of Kutch. Firstly, the craft park has encouraged many artisans to display their art and showcase the culture of Kutch ton the world.

In addition, keeping in mind the age groups visiting the park, additions like electronic rides for children, a Radha-Krishna temple, and a lovely lotus pond were made.
