Delhi

-Dildaar Dilli

Delhi is a city and the national capital territory in north-central India.

The city of Delhi actually has two components: Old Delhi, in the north, which is the historic city; and New Delhi, in the south, since 1947 the capital of India which was built in the first part of the 20th century as the capital of British India.

Delhi

One of the country’s largest urban mass, the city extends across the Yamuna River, a tributary of the Ganges (Ganga) River, about 100 miles (160 km) south of the Himalayas.

The national capital territory holds Old and New Delhi and the surrounding metropolitan region, as well as adjacent rural areas.

To the east, the territory shares its border with the state of Uttar Pradesh, and to the north, west, and south it is bounded by the state of Haryana.

History of Delhi:

Delhi is of great historical importance as an important commercial, transport, and cultural hub and it is also the political centre of India. The city was named for Raja Dhilu.

He was a king who ruled in the region in the 1st century BCE. The different names by which the city has been known—including Delhi, Dehli, Dilli, and Dhilli, among others are likely corruptions of his name.

Delhi

The history of Delhi dates back to Vedic history of India when Pandavas and the Kauravas lived in this region and it was then called ‘Indraprastha’.

It was later called as “Dilli” in various Sanskrit texts and was ruled by the Tomar dynasty, a fierce warrior class that ruled the Haryana/Indraprastha region.

Then, there came the growth of the Slavs, Khiljis, Tughlaqs, Sayyid, and the Lodhis. Anybody that captured Dhilli essentially got access to the Indian subcontinent and the word “Dehli” is now synonymous with the phrase “doorstep”.

The very famous ruler from the Khilji dynasty was Alauddin Khilji. In India after the Khiljis, the Tughlaqs came into power. And the most famous ruler of this dynasty is Mohammed bin Tughlaq.

Down the history, Delhi has seen many fortresses like Lal Kot, Quila Rai Pithora, Tughlaqabad,  Siri, Jahanpanah, Firozabad, Dinpanah, and Shahjahanabad.

The “raids” or “sacks” from Delhi sultanates were terrifying for many Hindu rulers and people south of Delhi.

Popular Language of Delhi:

Hindi is the official language of Delhi. As the city is dominated by the Hindu population, the majority of the people speak in Hindi.

Chief Minister (CM) of Delhi:

Arvind Kejriwal is the chief minister of Delhi

Governor of Delhi:

Anil Baijal is the governor of Delhi

High Court of New Delhi:

It is located in Shershah Road, Justice SB Marg, New Delhi, Delhi 110503
