It is said when Mary Curzon, the wife of the Viceroy of India – Lord Curzon of Kedleston, visited the park to see Indian one-horned rhinoceros; she wasn’t able to find even one.

Then she persuaded her husband to take urgent measures to protect the dwindling species which he did by initiating planning for their protection. After a series of meetings and documentation, the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest was created with an area of 232 kilometre square (90 sq mi) in 1905.

Kaziranga National Park is one of the biggest and most popular animal reserves in the country. It accounts for the conservation of various species including the famous one-horned rhinoceros.

It is situated at Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and Nagaon districts of the state of Assam, India. The sanctuary, which hosts two-thirds of the world’s great one-horned rhinoceroses, is a World Heritage Site.

The rhino population in Kaziranga National Park is 2,413. It comprises 1,641 adult rhinos,387 sub-adults and 385 calves.

Wildlife In Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga is home to the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. The park is home to large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Kaziranga is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International for the conservation of bird species.

Birds like lesser white-fronted goose, ferruginous duck, Baer’s pochard duck and lesser adjutant, greater adjutant, black-necked stork, and Asian Openbill stork specially migrate from Central Asia during the winter season.
When compared with other protected areas in India, Kaziranga has achieved notable success in wildlife conservation.

Important Facts About Kaziranga National Park

Due to the difference in altitude between the eastern and western areas of the park, here one can see mainly four types of vegetation’ like alluvial inundated grasslands, alluvial savanna woodlands, tropical moist mixed deciduous forests, and tropical semi-evergreen forests.

Kumbhi, Indian gooseberry, the cotton tree, and elephant Apple are amongst the famous trees that can be seen in the park. In addition to grasses and forests, the swamps of Kaziranga National Park have an abundant cover of water lilies, water hyacinth and lotus, providing a beautiful look to the surroundings of the park.

According to a Landsat data for 1986, the different vegetation coverage in Kaziranga National Park is as follows: Tall thickets of elephant grass 41%, short grasses 11%, open jungle 29%, rivers and water bodies 8%, sand 6% and swamps 4%

Issue of Poaching In Kaziranga National Park

The authorities engaged in wildlife conservation are making use of modern-day technology to fight poachers in the best possible way.

CCTV systems are installed to keep round the clock track of the activities happening in and around the park. Further, in April 2013, the officials launched an unmanned aerial vehicle – Drone in Kaziranga National Park.

The Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation & Conservation was established near Kaziranga National Park under the Wildlife Trust of India. There was a time when poaching activities took a toll to the wild species.

To combat this inhumane act, the authorities strengthened the patrolling at Kaziranga National Park. More forest rangers were employed and provided with better arms to fight with the poachers. The rangers put their best efforts for making sure that animals are dwelling in the safe premises.

Further, the respective governmental authorities have decided to set up a special police station near the national park that will deal with wildlife crime.
