The Statue of Unity is a magnificent statue of the Iron Man of India and Indian freedom fighter Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950). Sardar Patel served the country as the First Deputy Prime Minister of India.
He played an essential role in leading India to freedom. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (originally Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel) was born in Nadiad of Gujarat in India. He integrated the provinces of India into an Independent Indian Nation which were under British colonies.
The Sardar Patel Statue is located in the state of Gujarat, India. The Statue of Unity is built at a height of 182 metres(597 ft), thus becoming the tallest statue in the world. The iconic statue is situated in the proximity of Narmada River and Sardar Sarovar Dam.
About Statue of Unity
Previously, the Spring Temple Buddha of Henan Province in China held the title of the world’s tallest statue. The Spring Temple Buddha statue stood at a height of 153 metres excluding base.
In India, Veera Abhaya Anjaneya Hanuman Swami statue was the tallest before the erection of Statue of Unity. Located in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India with a height of 41 metres (135 ft), the statue of Lord Hanuman is the second tallest statue in India.
The entire height of the Statue of Unity is 240 metres (790 ft). The base of the statue is 58 metres (190 ft) high and the statue of Sardar Patel is 182 metres (597 ft) tall above it. The height with number 182 m denotes the count of seats in the legislative assembly of Gujarat.
The Statue of Unity is comprised of five zones. The first zone extends from the base of the statue to the height of the statue’s shins. This zone has a memorial garden and a museum. The second zone heads up to the thighs of the statue.
Next is the third zone channelling into the viewing gallery at 153 metres elevation. Ahead of the third zone is the fourth zone, kept for maintenance area. And the final or fifth zone occupies the head and shoulders of the statue.
Out of the five zones, only the first, second and third zones are accessible or open for the visitors. The area inside each of the legs of the statue, made by concrete towers has two elevators.
How to Reach Statue of Unity
Nearest Airport to Statue of Unity- Ahemdabad Airport, Gujarat is about 190 kilometres away from the site. From the airport, one can hire a cab or use state transport to get to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue.
The other closer airports are Surat International Airport, Surat, Gujarat and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Nearest Railway Station to Statue of Unity- Vadodara railway station is the nearest railhead to the Sardar Patel statue. From there, one can book a cab, an auto or use State transport. The other closer railway stations are also at Surat and Ahmedabad.
The nearest bus stop to Statue of Unity is in Kevadiya.
Location of Statue of Unity- The Sardar Patel statue is located near Kevadiya town in Gujarat, India which is 3.5 km away. It stands on the Sadhu Island of the Narmada River. Also, it is 3.2 km downstream of the Sardar Sarovar Dam.
The site of the statue is around 200 km away from Ahmedabad, 150 km away from Surat, 219 km away from Gandhinagar, 380 km away from Rajkot and 414 km away from Mumbai.
Visiting Statue of Unity
Timings & Tickets of Statue of Unity
The Statue of Unity welcomes visitors from Tuesday to Sunday between 8 am to 6 pm. It is closed on Mondays for maintenance. Tourists and visitors can avail tickets at either Shreshtha Bharat Bhavan or SOU Ticketing Centre between 7:30 a.m to 5:30 pm.
The entry ticket of Statue of Unity is Rs. 120 for adults and Rs. 60 for children. With this ticket, one can view the statue, the museum, the valley of flowers, memorial and Sardar Sarovar Dam.
To have the view of the surroundings that is visiting the observation deck has a different price. The ticket price including the entry and observation deck is Rs. 350 for adults and Rs. 200 for children. The observation deck is at an elevation of 400 ft.
Attractions at Statue of Unity
The Statue of Unity is the main attraction. Then there are exhibition hall and museum inside. There is also an audio-visual show playing history of Patel, freedom movement and about the attractions around.
Visitors can enjoy the Laser Light Show and Sound Show from 7:30 pm onwards daily except on Mondays.
Also, the visitors can go around and take a tour of Valley of Flowers, Sardar Sarovar Dam, Shoolpaneshwar Sanctuary and Temple. One can enjoy boating, helicopter ride and bird watching here.
