Sustainability – An inevitable guidance.

Sustainability - An inevitable guidance. 1

Sustainability has a very simple meaning which is “ developing or using a resource at such a rate which is sufficient for us and leaves enough for the future generations”.

Following these can be a bit tough. Sustainability has been in the spotlight in every conversation regarding climate change.

Rightly so, up until now, we have consumed every resource Earth has provided to us with alarming greed, not thinking about the future populace of this planet. We end up sleeping peacefully but what about the little toddler who can’t see the nature truly green?

What can we do?

We can support sustainability by consciously choosing sustainable and eco-friendly variants of products we use every day!

Let’s look at a few products which meet our needs in a green fashion:

Containers:

As Indians, we have grown up with any plastic “Dabba” being reused to store knick-knacks around the house.

As far as recycling goes, it’s pretty thrifty! But let’s not make a decision to BUY plastic containers; including tiffin boxes!

It’s better to opt for metal lunch boxes because they are safer than plastics which should not be used to store hot foods for a long time. Metals can withstand heat, last for a long time and when compared to plastics, decompose fairly quickly. Plastic containers, on the other hand, are attractive but a metal container is much appealing.

Water Bottles

Make the decision to carry your own reusable bottle wherever you go instead of buying a flimsy plastic bottle and throwing it away after a single-use. Metal Water bottles are not only good for health but also in trend!

The reusable plastics keep releasing microplastics into whatever we store in them, which makes their way into our bodies.

So we are directly hurting ourselves in the process too. For further health benefits, use copper bottles. The copper gently dissolves in the water (don’t worry the bottle doesn’t disintegrate).

Copper improves our immune system and aids digestion. A win-win.

Sanitary products:

Plastic has truly occupied our lives. Pads, tampons, razors, etc. hugely contribute to growing landfills. Most of the sanitary products on the market today are made of plastic and rayon which do not decompose. Instead, opt for eco-friendly pads, reusable pads or menstrual cups which are much more easily available on the market today.

They give a cleaner shave and they can last a lifetime!

Sources suggest that 9000 tonnes of menstrual waste are generated in India every month, consisting majority of sanitary pads.

The plastic in sanitary pads does not deteriorate easily, the menstrual trash itself comprises of the blood and body fluids, is an additional source of pollution that can drive to deadly diseases.

Every year about 2 billion razors end up in the garbage. Replacement is metal razors. Metal razors can be used for more than decades.

Clothing:Sustainability - An inevitable guidance. 5

A very easy way to have sustainable clothing is by not thinking about what is trendy but thinking about what will be a classic. A few classics are solid t-shirts, blue jeans, black jeans, a denim jacket, solid leggings. These items can be matched with numerous other clothes and voila! A new outfit.

Not only reusability but the material of clothing also matters. Opt for organic cotton, linens, Jutes. They have excellent absorbency and lets your skin breathe.

Try to exclude man-made fabrics such as polyester, nylon, viscose out of your wardrobe.

Avoid Plastic.

How would you feel if you lost your breath for a minute? If we can’t tailor our bodies how can the future generation? Plastic has proven beneficial for everyone but that invention has flaws too. Avoid the use of plastic and spread awareness about the imperfections of plastic.
