Expressing Indian cinema’s larger-than-life aspect, we must say that monsoon in Bollywood portrayed drama, romance, passion, and intensity and yes, rain is one of the most-picked props of storytelling in Bollywood since so many songs and popular scenes have been made constructive using this amalgamation. 

A cosy corner at home, a cup of hot tea served with pakoras and some evergreen soulful melodies are so far the best combination to soothe yourself on a rainy day.

1. Tip Tip Barsa Pani, Mohra(1994)

This sizzling track from the 90s with Raveena Tandon dressed in a scorching yellow saree and Akshay Kumar all drenched is still widely remembered for its amazing rhythmic beats and Viju Shah’s music coupled with Anand Bakshi’s lyrics and melodious voices of Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan makes it an addictive rainy song.

2. Pyaar Hua Ikraar Hua, Shree 420(1955)

This major classic starring the legendary Raj Kapoor and Nargis rose to become an epitome of love and confession during its time.

The simplicity of the song with the actors walking together under one umbrella with the soothing view of their Polka dot, Charlie Chaplinesque era outfits made the song more appealing.

This eternal black and white romance depicting song were composed by music directors Shankar-Jaikishan, sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey in the beautiful words given by Shailendra.

3. Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si, Chalti Ka Naam Gadi(1958)

This song depicts a beautiful scenario where a car breaks down due to heavy rains and a damsel in distress (Madhubala) steps out.

4. Dum Dum Diga Diga, Chhalia(1960)

This evergreen number starring Raj Kapoor and Nutan totally depict the joy of first rains when you see this eternal song in black and white sung by Mukesh Ji.

5. Aaj Rapat Jaayein, Namak Halal (1982)

A sizzling monsoon number, showcasing a saree tussle between the jaunty Amitabh Bachhan and the sombre Smita Patil is sung by Bappi Lahiri in the words given by Anjaan.

The unflinching canoodling coupled with reminiscent lyrics best describes Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman’s sizzling wet rendezvous on the terrace.

This song full of sensuality and seduction is composed by RD Burman and in the words of Anand Bakshi.

9. Rimjhim Gire Saawan, Manzil(1979)

Composed by Pancham Da and lyrics by Yogesh, this melody is a stroll down the wet lanes and corners of Bombay. The roads, taxis, and major landmarks of the city before its transformation is a typical throwback to ancient Bombay.

This song sung by Lata Mangeshkar stars Amitabh Bachhan and Moushumi Chatterjee walking down the water-logged streets of Bombay in the heavy downpour.

10. Lagi Aaj Saawan, Chandni(1989)

This a beautiful melody is sung by Suresh Wadkar and Anupama Deshpande starring Vinod Khanna feeling all nostalgic about his late wife and Sridevi looking charmingly graceful soaked in a yellow saree.

This song is composed by Shiv Hari in the beautiful words of Anand Bakshi.

12. Ghanan Ghanan, Lagaan(2001) 

This is a gem music number from the movie Lagaan which led India’s entry to the Oscar’s in 2001 and was set in a village in western India where drought-stricken farmers appeal to the rain gods for downpours.

This song from Ashutosh Gowarikar’s period drama is a musical masterpiece with A.R. Rahman’s composition and Javed Akhtar’s lyrics. This tune brings hope in the hearts of Indian villages.

13. Bhaage Re Mann, Chameli(2003)

This film depicts an unusual story of an encounter of an investment banker and a prostitute stuck in each others company due to heavy rains.

Chameli (Kareena Kapoor) dances her heart out in the mellifluent voice of Sunidhi Chauhan despite all circumstances with such reckless abandon that it makes the viewer want to enjoy the rains like her.
